GOLD ROUTE

The Roman Gallery

This is a mixed route, with part of the route to be done by car, specifically from Cangas del Narcea to past San Pedro de Las Montañas, and another part of hiking, along dirt tracks that will take us to see the ancient Roman gallery, the carcabón (the great cut in the mountain) and an old cortín.

The history of gold mining in this area is extensive and long-lasting. The Roman presence developed throughout the first two centuries of our era, and focused mainly on the extraction of metals such as iron, zinc and, mainly, gold. Witness to this are the remains of ancient Roman roads that can still be seen in towns in the region, as well as the numerous place names that refer to the extractive activity of the time (Montefurado, Valledor...)

The remains of the ancient Roman gallery can be visited, with guided interpretation, by the company Tour Narcea.

The town of Cangas del Narcea

Located at the confluence of the rivers Narcea and Luiña, the town of Cangas del Narcea, capital of the council of the same name, is the administrative center of a large region in the southwest of Asturias.

It preserves a large part of its historic centre, now declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, and its history goes back to time immemorial, although its existence as a town began in 1255, with the Town Charter granted by King Alfonso X the Wise.

Its urban centre conserves numerous monumental buildings, palaces, churches, bridges, with a history and characteristics worthy of appreciation.

The Basilica of Santa María Magdalena, the Chapel of El Carmen, the Palaces of Omaña, Toreno or Pambley, or its peculiar suspension bridge, are remnants of the rich history of Cangas that we can still contemplate and admire today. To do this, the local company Green Door Asturias offers guided tours to the town of Cangas, whose timetables you can find out about on its website or at the Cangas del Narcea Tourist Office.

Cangas del Narcea Wine Museum

The Cangas del Narcea Wine Museum is located in the southern part of the town, in the popular wine cellar district of Santiso. The complex, after the extension works, reopened its doors to the public on the 9th of July 2010.

The new building has an elliptical design, similar to a basket, with an enormous architectural load within the respect for the environment. The design, as a whole, aims to offer the visitor a walk through the wine culture of Asturias. The Museum's permanent exhibition consists of three adjoining buildings: In the main building, the visitor discovers six thematic areas divided into two rooms.

The visit is a journey through the work of the vineyard, its millenary history and the singular natural characteristics that make this wine a unique product, as well as the different tasks and calendars both in the vineyard and in the winery with their many peculiarities. The tour also allows us to see an extensive exhibition of pieces, each one of them with an almost unique singularity.

You will continue your visit in a second area at the back of the museum, where you can see an exhibition of large pieces, unique in that they were designed to meet specific needs. You will also be able to see a plantation and traditional vine trellises with local grape varieties. Finally, in a third building adjoining the museum, you can also discover a traditional Asturian wine cellar with an old beam wine press, which is nearly five hundred years old.

The visitor will find in every corner of the Museum multiple museographic resources based on new technologies such as audiovisuals and manipulatives, which will undoubtedly contribute to complete an attractive and different visit.

Church of St. John the Baptist in Corias

The monastery is known as ‘The Escorial of Asturias’ for its imposing appearance and it was said to have as many windows as there are days in the year. Its ground plan, a gigantic rectangle of more than seven thousand square metres with a central bay and two inner cloisters, its austere façade and its severe air are clearly reminiscent of the Herrera factory. Undoubtedly, Corias is, in its monumentality, one of the most important buildings of the 18th century in Asturias, where its original façade stands out with two outstanding façades giving access to the monastery and the church respectively.

The building, after being disentailed, had different functions as a Dominican novitiate, labour institute and vocational training centre.

In July 2013 it was inaugurated as a Parador Nacional (National Inn). In no Parador, except in Corias, do guests share space with the former tenants. After the adaptation of the building, the Dominican community was relocated inside the monastery and, at present, they are in charge of keeping the adjoining church open for worship. The small community is housed in the spaces adjacent to the church, on its east façade.

The company Green Door Asturias from Cangas carries out guided tours of the church of San Juan Bautista de Corias, as well as the sacristy and one of the cloisters of the old monastery. You can find out the times and prices of these visits at the Cangas del Narcea Tourist Office.

Sanctuary of El Acebo

Built in 1575, in polished stone and with a sober appearance, the history of this Sanctuary has been accompanied since its beginnings by a multitude of episodes that narrate the miracles of the Virgin of El Acebo (Our Lady of Holly), a Romanesque carving from the 13th century, originally an image of the seated Virgin, entirely made of wood. Over time, the sculpted body was replaced by clothes and cloaks that cover a frame, maintaining the head of the original carving, and the figure of the Child Jesus was replaced in 1900, due to its deterioration.

The main altarpiece, dating from the 17th century, is the work of the sculptor Manuel Ron de Pixán from Cangas, and is in the Baroque style disseminated by the Corias Monastery Workshop.

It is located on a hill, some 12 kilometres from Cangas del Narcea, and from there you can enjoy prodigious views of the municipality of Cangas del Narcea.
